The original Gyotaku print (fish and ink on rice paper) was started late in 2019 year and completed in September 2020 for a local sushi/ramen restaurant in Charlotte, NC. The original piece doubles as a sound baffle to absorb ambient noise during service. Keeping with the restaurant’s theme, I created the Gyotaku to provide another visual element and to compliment the rest of their decor.
Each inked fish was painstakingly arranged to create a school as they swim in formation. Final touches to the fins and other details were then added to complete the swimming school.
